Celebration of Saints Philip and Jakov
Novi Vinodolski will once again celebrate the day of its heavenly protectors, St. Philip and James, after whom the parish church is named. The central celebration will take place on the feast day, Monday, May 1st, but the program will begin on Saturday.
All nature lovers and outdoor activity enthusiasts are invited to join a guided educational walk/ride on Saturday at 11:00 AM, focusing on the discovery of local medicinal herbs. The meeting point will be the new parking lot in the port of Novi Vinodolski, where Mrs. Vasiljevka, the tour guide, will introduce herself and explain the route that participants will take in cars towards the hinterland. The idea is to stop at several locations, depending on the herbs growing there, where participants can collect herbs, learn about their properties, uses, and more, in order to educate them about the healing power of nature and all that grows wild with beneficial effects on health. It is recommended to bring water, as the activity will last around two hours, and participants should bring cloth or paper bags, scissors, and footwear suitable for rocky terrain. In case of bad weather, the activity will be canceled.
For those interested in exploring and cycling or walking on their own, the hinterland offers beautiful cycling and hiking trails, Heavenly Labyrinths, the Glass Chapel, and the Oči Vinodola viewpoints, from which you can enjoy stunning views of the area. All details can be found on the Novi Vinodolski Tourist Board website under the Active Holiday section.
On Sunday, April 30th, a flower market will open on Frankopan Square in Novi Vinodolski, running on Sunday and Monday from 9:00 AM. The market will fill Novi with fragrant flowers in a vibrant display of colors. In addition to the flower market, children will be entertained by the animation team from Šareno Svijet, with a performance and fun games starting at 10:00 AM.
Monday is reserved for the main celebration, featuring flowers, a 1000-egg and asparagus frittata, which will be served at 11:00 AM in the city center, along with the traditional “Sung Balcony” event. The balconies of Srićina House, Bistro Fran, and Gost&one will be adorned with the beautiful voices and melodies of Jose Butorc, Suzana Matušan Avgustini, and Tea Bašić, with piano accompaniment by Mateo and Mladen Žmak, starting at 10:00 AM. A Holy Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 AM in the Parish Church of St. Philip and James.
The weekend after, on May 6th, the XV. Gathering of Folklore Ensembles “Sea and Plain” will take place at 6:00 PM in the city center. The event will begin with a festive procession of participants along the Korzo of Croatian Defenders, followed by performances at Frankopan Square, with performances by: HKUD “Tamburica” Koraće, BIH; KUD “Zvir” Jelenje; KUD “Belec” Belec; KUD “Radinje” Siče; KUD “Ilija Dorčić” and the Primary School Ivana Mažuranića Novi Vinodolski.
