Old Town

Stone, history, and a distinctive silhouette

The old stone town of Novi reflects resilience and the interconnectedness of human life. Its narrow streets breathe history. Embark on a journey through time by passing through Mala Vrata, one of the entrances to the Old Town. You will encounter a network of winding houses and alleys. The solid stone houses and narrow streets will lead you to the parish church of St. Philip and St. James, the former cathedral of the Modruš or Krbava Diocese (1493–1969), with its richly decorated interior and the tall, white, recognizable bell tower. This well-known cityscape can be seen on numerous postcards.

Following the footsteps of bishops, the Frankopans, and narrow alleys

On the square opposite the church stands the Bishop’s Residence. Built in the mid-15th century, it was renovated in the 18th century by Bishop Ivan Krstitelj Ježić. It once served as the residence of all Modruš or Krbava bishops. The Baroque façade of the residence is divided into horizontal and vertical fields with shallow palmette ornaments. A sundial is mounted on the residence. Before continuing your journey, take a moment to enjoy the stunning view of Marina Novi and the rugged coastline.

Wandering through the narrow stone alleys, you will come across Uglić, the narrowest street in Novi Vinodolski. It is only 30 meters long and 90 centimeters wide. We are sure you will also enjoy the colorful variety of unique doors that adorn the old town.

Here, you will also find the Church of the Holy Trinity with a valuable collection of sacred artifacts, the Frankopan Castle with the Kvadrac tower, where one of the most important cultural monuments of our nations and one of the most significant European medieval documents, the Vinodol Code, was passed. Additionally, there are numerous small chapels and other significant historical buildings.

Take a walk through the long, picturesque alleys of the Old Town and explore the rich history of this region.
