The Wine Rose of Vinodol has Started – A Spectacle in Pavlomir!

At the Pavlomir Wine House, last night marked the opening of The Wine Rose of Vinodol for the 19th time, one of Croatia’s most iconic events, famous for its unique competition that crowns the most skillful and capable young woman in tasks related to viticulture, winemaking, and household skills—bridging the region’s past and present.

From the very first evening, the event reaffirmed its wide recognition and tourist appeal, as early-arriving domestic and international visitors filled the Pavlomir venue to enjoy the outstanding program prepared by the organizers.

This year’s competition features 11 contestants from across Croatia, who over three spectacular days will compete in nine distinct disciplines. On opening night, the challenges focused on vineyard work. Guided by the inspired duo Casabianca—Mario Lipovšek Battifiacia and Irena Grdinić—the contestants tackled three tasks: filling a plastic vessel with water from a traditional “brentača,” stomping grapes with their feet, and manually crushing grapes.

The evening began with a procession through the vineyards featuring the participants and their KUD “Ilija Dorčić” companions making their entrance onto the stage, followed by the “mantinjada” performance by Nikica and Vinko Piškulić (Juraši). A poetic opening announcement was read by Prince Velibor Toplovec, officially launching the competition. Then Tena Peričić, director of the Novi Vinodolski Tourist Board, and Mayor Tomislav Cvitković addressed the crowd, wishing everyone a wonderful three days and congratulating the contestants, while expressing pride in preserving the Vinodol region’s traditions.

The contestants and judges were then introduced. The jury included Ljiljana Stošić (jury president, Novi Vinodolski TB), Tena Peričić (Director), Alenka Spoja (Vinodolska Municipality TB Director and “Mama Ružica”), Damir Kedžo (celebrated musician), and Sanjin Krišković served as head judge.

The competition officially commenced, applauded by the enthusiastic crowd. With music by Prava stvar, the scenic Pavlomir vineyard setting, and gastronomic offerings, it was a feast for all the senses.

By the end of the night, the top three contestants were announced: joint second place went to Nina Piškulić and Lucija Krpan, while Lucija Biondić took first place that evening. Their points will carry over to determine this year’s Ružica Vinodola.

Both local and foreign guests praised the evening’s ambiance. Petra Furlin (Zagreb) commented, “Excellent, perfect, very beautiful setting.” Lucija Rajnović (Praputnjak) shared that she attends every year and is consistently delighted by the entertainment and outstanding culinary offerings.

The competition continues tonight at Frankopan Square, where the contestants will compete in household-themed challenges with Mario Lipovšek Batiffiacia hosting and musical entertainment by Point. The grand finale is set for Saturday, August 19, in the Old Town: final wine service challenges curated by Irena Grdinić, followed by music from Giuliano and Diktatori. Around 11 PM, this year’s Ružica Vinodola and the “most charismatic” contestant—selected by the jury and the contestants—will be crowned.

In the Vinodol Code square, visitors will enjoy presentations of traditional crafts, a wooden merry-go-round for children, markets with local products and souvenirs, the Kvarner Wines Festival, and tasting of the event’s signature sparkling rosé, “Ružica Vinodola.” Special photo points and traditional floral wreaths will be available to help visitors create lasting memories.

The event’s organizers include the Novi Vinodolski and Vinodolska Municipality Tourist Boards, with support from local institutions. Partners include the Ministry of Agriculture, Croatian and Kvarner Tourist Boards, and others.

Following a fantastic opening night, we look forward to the next two spectacular evenings. See you again!
