This story is based on the real and only meeting between the newly appointed president of Yugoslavia, Josip Broz Tito, and the head of the Catholic Church in Croatia, Cardinal Alojzije Stepinac, which took place in Zagreb on June 4, 1945.
Both figures are complex in their own right and have left an indelible mark on former communist Yugoslavia like few others in its bloody history.
The story also partially draws on a recently discovered transcript of their meeting. The entire narrative unfolds in real time, just like the historical event – a conversation lasting just under two hours.
