In Novi Vinodolski and the Vinodol Valley, there is a story preserved through oral tradition. It tells of a custom dating back centuries, to the time of the rule of the Croatian noble Frankopan family. According to the story, at the end of the grape harvest, the vineyard workers would choose the “Ružica”, (Wine Rose) from among the young women harvesting the grapes – the girl considered both the most beautiful and the most hardworking. She would be crowned with a wreath of grapevines and, accompanied by the sounds of traditional folk instruments, led at the head of a festive procession into the town. According to historical records, this custom was last observed in the 19th century, in 1880.

Inspired by this story, the modern The Wine Rose of Vinodol event was created. Every year, at the end of August, twelve contestants compete over the course of three days for the prestigious title of The Wine Rose of Vinodol. The competition features attractive traditional games inspired by winemaking, viticulture and the customs of everyday life in the Vinodol Valley in centuries past.

Some of the most exciting competitions take place on the first evening in the romantic setting of the Pavlomir vineyards. Visitors can watch the contestants demonstrate their skills in carrying baskets of grapes and in both hand and foot grape crushing using specially made wooden vats. Guests are also invited to taste authentic local delicacies and discover the charm of the Old Town in a unique atmosphere accompanied by traditional klapa singing and live music.

Above all, The Wine Rose of Vinodol is a celebration created for the present day while inspired by local heritage. The competition games are based on the historical selection of the Wine Rose, while the fair reflects the spirit of traditional marketplaces by presenting contemporary handmade and environmentally friendly products. Following the example of old-fashioned village festivities, where entertainment relied on traditional instruments, singing and creativity, visitors can enjoy music, dance and a variety of cultural performances throughout the event.

The Wine Rose of Vinodol is a contemporary festival inspired by the rich history of the Vinodol Valley, and its future depends on the interest and impressions of its visitors. We sincerely hope you will become part of its story.
