Lose to Gain – Participants Reach Halfway Point in the Fight Against Obesity

13. December 2024.

The Sports Recreation Association “Sport for All” of the Primorje-Gorski Kotar County, together with its partners and under the sponsorship of the County, launched an excellent program titled “Lose to Gain”, aimed at all generations – and it has now reached its halfway mark.

According to the plan, this commendable free program is taking place in three locations: Rijeka, Opatija, and Novi Vinodolski. A total of 350 people applied, which speaks to the strong public interest. Based on professional assessments, 30 participants per location were selected, giving a total of 90 individuals with the greatest need the opportunity to improve their health.

Over the past few months, participants attended an introductory lecture “All the Risks of Obesity”, followed by a medical evaluation. They underwent diagnostics using the BIA medical device, which measures body composition (bone, fat, water), and the ABI test (ankle-brachial index), a simple method used to detect peripheral artery disease (PAD).

Based on the collected diagnostic data, each participant received a customized nutrition plan – a weekly menu to follow. A lecture titled “Let’s Exercise, Have Fun and Stay Fit” was also held, providing education and motivation for full program engagement. After that, the participants began a routine of Nordic walking and health-oriented physical training with various instructors, including fitness, yoga, pilates, and cardio. Results are already noticeable – with some participants losing up to 5 kg.

The continuation of the first phase will take place this Saturday in Opatija at 11:00 AM, with an MM Training session led by the well-known trainer Mario Mlinarić. After the workout, participants will engage in Nordic walking along Opatija’s scenic trails.

After Saturday’s event, several more sessions are planned through December 20, after which participants will be “left on their own” to demonstrate their commitment by organizing training independently while following their prescribed diet.

The program resumes on January 15, when all participants will undergo diagnostics once again so organizers can assess progress and readiness for the next phase, which will continue through spring and culminate in a final event with individual results.

“Lose to Gain” is a brilliant project that has captured the public’s attention since its announcement, and its purpose is more relevant than ever in times when people of all ages are battling obesity.
